The Music Man was one of the last great movie musicals from any studio, and it proved to be that rarest of events: a Broadway show that was measurably improved by its transition to the screen. Robert Preston made his musical debut--both live and on film--as "Professor" Harold Hill, the upbeat charlatan who promises to teach a small-town boys band by the "think system." But it's the part Preston was born to play and the one for which he will always be best remembered. Composer Meredith Willson based The Music Man on his own small-town Midwestern boyhood, circa 1912, a quasi-mythical place where the old-maid librarian looks and sings like Shirley Jones. The boy himself is an adorable Ron Howard, lisp-singing "Gary, Indiana." Willson's entire score, featuring a combination of what are now standards, such as "Goodnight My Someone" and "Till There Was You" and show-specific numbers ("Trouble," "76 Trombones"), is never less than infectious. This dazzling special edition is also as bright and sunny as any 4th of July in Iowa could ever hope to be. --Robert Windeler

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Music Man
In my opinion, the Music Man is the best musical I have seen to date. It even tops My Fair Lady!!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Music Man (Blu-ray)
GOOD movie as always, but this Blu-ray transfer is disappointing. The movie definitely deserves to have a first rate remastering, but it apparently did not get any remastering whatsoever! The colors are far from saturated and on many scenes, there is a slight milky haze over the entire frame. In brief, the Blu-ray version could be a waste of money. It is probably largely a waste of a high definition audio and video format.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Tour de Force for Robert Preston
Hollywood is notorious for remaking Broadway hits with "more commercial" stars and bypassing the stage actors who originated the roles. Julie Andrews lost "My Fair Lady" to Audrey Hepburn, Lucille Ball was chosen over Angela Lansbury for "Mame," and Rosalind Russell got the role of Mama Rose in "Gypsy" instead of powerhouse Ethel Merman. Occasionally, however, studio executives make intelligent casting choices when adapting a Broadway musical, as in "The Music Man."

"The Music Man" stars Robert Preston, from the original Broadway production, as con man Harold Hill. "Professor" Hill sweeps into River City, Iowa, to form a boys' band, to the disapproval and later delight of the town librarian, Marian (Shirley Jones). Preston created his signature role of the charming stranger who stirs up a sleepy town. He transforms town skeptics into enthusiastic cheerleaders when he talk/sings "Ya Got Trouble," noting the evils of ragtime, slang, and young men frittering away their time playing pool.

Composer Meredith Willson based "The Music Man" on his own small-town Midwestern boyhood, around 1912. The score includes the standards "76 Trombones," "Till There Was You," "My White Night," and "Goodnight, My Someone." The cast includes Buddy Hackett, Hermione Gingold, Paul Ford, and seven-year-old Ronnie Howard, who lisps his way through the tune, "Gary, Indiana."

Opening on Broadway during its Golden Age of Musicals, "The Music Man" is an old-fashioned show, rich with comedy and melody, touching lightly on social commentary. Preston makes his charlatan charismatic with fast talk, razzmatazz, "think system" of music education, and ability to make stodgy skeptics believe in the boys band. Hill is larger than life -- a lovable scoundrel who is ultimately tamed by the lovely spinster Marian. The movie is an enjoyable record of Preston's fiery, funny interpretation of musical comedy's foremost con man. Blu-ray extras include a making-of featurette, an introduction by Shirley Jones, and a theatrical trailer.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Greatest of the 1950's Broadway Musicals
"Friend, either you are closing your eyes to a situation you do not wish to acknowledge, or you are not aware of the callaber of disaster indicated by the presense of a pool table in you community."

What can you say. It has everything - great music, comedy, romance, charm, and, most of all, fun, lots of fun.

The video and sound of the Blu-ray are flawless.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome update of a favorite movie
WOW is all I can say. How did they do this? I've loved The Music Man since I was a kid (a long time ago), and was happy to have it on DVD. Having received a new Blu-Ray player and HD TV for Christmas, I thought this was perfect. WOW again -- I have no idea how they made it so clear, crisp and colorful, without making it look made over! It was perfect in performance and quality. I enjoyed the extra little clips at the end as well. Don't worry about purchasing this, even if you have a previous version. This is terrific; a full 10 stars an a 5-star rating.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - great movie
the music man was just a great movie of the 1960s. good family viewing. and very sentimental.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Bluray of Music Man (PQ and Sound)
I actually bought this because my wife loves musicals and this one especially. I'm not a huge fan of them, and only watched it to make her happy. In the end, though, I wound up watching the entire movie and will watch it many times more, not because of its inherent charm (which it does have in plenty; can you say young Ron Howard faking a lisp?), but because of it's amazing picture quality (PQ) and sound.

I didn't know this film looked this good. The large scale dance scenes are marvelous because of the colorful costumes and sets and the non-stop action, all captured beautifully in 1080P with extraordinary detail. The recorded sound has a great depth and punch to it. The barbershop quartet scenes will make you crank your home theater system out of sheer enjoyment. This transfer competes with the quality of the 2001: A Space Odyssey transfer that I consider a high mark. I'm not fascinated by special features and so I haven't really evaluated the ones available on this disc, but it doesn't seem lacking for those folks who really enjoy these features; especially when you consider the age of most material associated with this film.

Summary:
-Surprisingly *EXCELLENT* PQ
-Excellent audio
-Reasonable price, especially if you or someone you love loves this film as much as my wife

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Musical!
In a timer of worries and woes, keep this DVD handy, play it, sing along, and your troubles, yes, I mean lots ands lots of troubles, will fade away!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great memories good entertainment
I am old enough, alas, to remember the original movie and young enough at heart to appreciate blue-ray technology, so actually I enjoyed this movie very much. It is a set piece, a very restricted musical, but it is still fun. I don't think there is another movie quite like it. The costuming and sets look really good on our large screen TV. The musical itself is a glimpse of a past farther back--the 1900s--than the glimpse of the past--1962--served up with 2010 technology. Cool.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - WHEN HOLLYWOOD GETS IT RIGHT...
...They really get it right. Such is the case with the filmed version of "The Music Man". This film is simply irresistable! The music, the performances -all first rate and perfect casting throughout, the gorgeous color cinematography, the costumes, the production design. I could go on and on. If you've never seen this film or only seen it in pan and scan television broadcasts, you owe it to yourself to see this gem! Everyone agrees that Robert Preston was born to play this part. LIke Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady", it is difficult to imagine anyone else in the role. Shirley Jones is absolutely stunning! She has never looked lovelier. Her voice is a miracle. I place her voice in the top five greatest female voices of all time. Wonderful film!
