Manufacturer Description
KidAlert! v.w.s. (visual warning system) Parents know how beneficial it is for young children to play outdoors, but often are fearful to leave them unattended - particularly if their home is on a busy neighborhood street. It’s common for children to immerse themselves in active outdoor play and subsequently forget the safety rules their parents, care givers and teachers have instilled in them. A pick-up game of street hockey or driveway basketball, for example, can find a youngster tearing after a puck or ball with no regard for the rules of the road. To heighten driver awareness, the folks at Step2 are proud to introduce KidAlert! v.w.s. (visual warning system) - the "children at play" safety companion. It only takes a moment to place this high child-like figure at the end of a driveway to alert all that pass by that young children are at play and caution should be taken. Its brightly-colored body with reflector-strip decal aids visibility during twilight hours and 46 1/2' high red warning flag are positioned to alert motorists to proceed with caution. For optimum effectiveness, Step2 recommends removal from the area when children are finished so its presence is only visible during actual playtime. Made in the USA.
From the Manufacturer
Slow down for safety with the Step2 KidAlert VWS. This brightly colored character flags passing motorists to alert them to the presence of children, and is light enough for your children to set up.

KidAlert Really Helps
I recently bought the KidAlert Visual Warning System because we were having problems with cars speeding by while the kids played outside. The combination of the turtle's bright green colour and the red flag catches the attention of people driving by. I am very happy to have bought this product.

These are great for Country too!
This was a must have for the country kids too. In rural ND, many people speed into the yard and don't realize that there is children playing outside. I bought the signs three years ago! Now when people who drive into our yard; see the signs...they slow way down. The signs do lose the flags on windy days. It would be great if they added some type clip to secure the flags.

Safe and Fun
The first time I saw one of these I thought the highway department had put them up. I thought, how great if you could buy one (and you can). It's huge (kids love large things), bright yellow- green (kids love bright things), heavy plastic (kids love durable things). So much better than those "Go Slow; Kids Playing" signs or the hand-painted "Slow Down" on a tree or telephone pole. Adults like this toy because it keeps kids safe. Kids like it because it's kid-sized and looks like another kid. Well-made and in every way a class act, and just the thing for your highway patrol.

Useful tool in a parent's arsenal...
I just purchased this item to place on the edge of our property on our semi-active street. We live at the entrance to a horseshoe neighborhood and I'm always upset at the neighbors and visitors that fly around the corner heading down the street, especially with children playing obviously in the yards.
I would NEVER substitute my parental guidance and attention with a plastic neon sign, however along with bike helmets and knee pads, I feel that this is yet another tool in a parent's safety arsenal. I don't allow my children to play in the street with the neighbor kids, but even sidewalks can be dangerous in the path of a speeding driver who isn't paying attention. I wish I had found this when we first moved in. I hope every neighbor with children will be following suit this summer.

Worth every penny and more!
I love this sign. We live on a very busy, yet residential street. The speed limit is 25 but NO ONE goes 25. More like 45-55 because it is a through street and its very wide. Our poor dog (who has been in the road only 2 times) has been hit 2 times by speeders on our street. Thank goodness he is okay and whats more, thank goodness it wasn't one of my children. Kids often get distracted while they are getting their energy out when they are outside...and on a 25 MPH residentail street, you shouldn't have to worry as much, but not so on ours. After numorous calles to the PD to ask them to patrol more, we finally found this sign and bought it right away. We only have it outside while the kids are playing, but it does work most of the time. I am purchasing a 2nd one to put on the other side of the road for more visibility. My 7 year old's freind lives accross the street, and although we have practiced and practiced crossing, it still makes me nervous because young children can't judge the general speed of an oncoming vehicle like and adult can. This sign has helped immensly. I wish our police department would get their act together and give tickets to anyone going over 30 on this street. I was told by an officer that the street was too wide for speed traps so they don't patrol it very often. GRRRRRRRRRR! Anyway, if you buy this sturdy sign that even holds up on windy days, you won't be sorry!

Very pleased with purchase
We purchased 2 of these safety men for our 3 young children. We do not have a very big yard for them to play in so sometimes their playing spills out into the drive-way and street. These safety men make it very easy for people driving by to know ahead of time that children are playing and to be on the lookout (we place them a short distance from where they are playing- one on each side of the street). I would highly recommend this product to anyone that needs to have something with high visability as a warning for children present.

KidAlert Guy
We've had "Mr. Safety" as we call him for about 4 years now and he is going strong. Left out year-round (even in 2 foot of snow) he retains all of his virtues except for his 'slow' sticker. (Gone somewhere, probably taken off by one of the kids-- LOL)
He may not be very education, and he's not really fun
but he is another little thing we parents can do to increase safety. Of course, we never let down our guard, and Mr. Safety isn't a magic totem, but he does give intelligent people a heads up that little children are around.
Five Stars. Not a cure all, but a solid helpful guy who wants to help keep us safe.

- Great safety tool!
I bought this for my neighborhood because we live on a dead end street where we get lots of turn around traffic. All of our kids love to play outside and ride bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc. We place the "green man" (as we call him) right in the middle of the street and when cars come down our street they see him and slow down. It gives us parents time to get everyone to the side of street. I even had a police officer drive down when he saw the "green man" to specifically ask me where I had purchased it because he wanted to get one for his own kids. It's important to teach kids to be aware of cars and pay attention when they're playing outside, but this tool adds an additional element of safety to help kids as well as parents keep their children safe. I recommend it for everyone!

- IF YOU THINK.......
that drivers who see a little green man holding a flag are going to slow down, think again. All it will do is distract the driver from looking in front of the car where he or she should be looking. This causes a GREATER risk to your children. Also, on a side note, in response to another review, it is not the police who REFUSE to lower the speed limit (Trust me, I am one. All we do is enforce the speed limit). It is traffic control. They are the ones who you need to contact if you want the speed limit lowered.
